Rakhi Diya

Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with a lot of gusto primarily in Northern India. Preparation for the occasion starts early in the morning with the members of the family taking a holy bath to purify their body and soul. Then the Rakhi threads and sweets are arranged.

Rakhi Thali

The Thali for the Puja is prepared by the sisters. The Thali comprises of kumkum (vermilion), rice grains, rakhi threads, incense sticks, sweets and a metal or an earthen lamp called diya.

Rakhi Tying Ceremony

The first offerings are made to the deities of the family. Then the Arti Ceremony (a Hindu ritual) is performed. During this ceremony the sister puts tilak and chaval on the forehead of the brother and ties the Rakhi on his right hand. Sacred mantras reverberate in the air as the brother and the sister unite in an eternal bond. The most common mantra that is chanted include:

"Suraj shakhan chhodian, Mooli chhodia beej

Behen ne rakhi bandhi / Bhai tu chir jug jee"

Translated in English, this means
The sun glows with its sunlight; the radish spreads its seeds,

I tie the rakhi to you my brother and wish that you may long live.
